The Institute of Optics and Quantum Electronics works in the field of interaction of extremely intense laser radiation with matter in large width with working groups of 5 professorships (2 of them jointly appointed with the Helmholtz Institute Jena) and one junior professorship.
The spectrum ranges from phase-stabilized single cycle pulses to the petawatt power class and from photoelectron spectroscopy to X-ray spectroscopy and polarimetry. The institute has unique technological expertise in several of these fields.
In addition, the institute is strongly involved in teaching and serves beginner lectures for major and minor students as well as lectures for higher semesters including master's degree courses. A broad spectrum of topics in optics is covered, ranging from the basics of optics to nonlinear optics, X-ray physics and relativistic optics.
The institute is networked in many respects. On site, it is involved in the interfaculty Center for Medical Optics and Photonics (ZeMOP) and the Abbe Center of Photonics. There is also a very close network with the Helmholtz Institute Jena. At the European level, the company's participations in LaserLab Europe and in the major ELI and HiPER projects are worth mentioning.
