Dr Christopher Spiess, former PhD student of Prof. Andreas Tünnermann and Prof. Fabian Steinlechner, was awarded the Applied Photonics Award 2024External link in the category 'Best Dissertation' for his dissertation 'Clock Synchronisation with Single Photons' at the Photonic DaysExternal link on 26 September 2024.

His work offers a revolutionary solution for high-precision synchronisation of clocks in quantum communication networks without the need for additional synchronisation patterns or highly stable atomic clocks. This innovative technology not only has the potential to increase the security of quantum communications, but could also be used in areas such as space travel and critical infrastructure such as energy or water supply networks.

In addition, Paula Heik (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) was honoured for her Master's thesis on the development of new manufacturing processes in the electronics industry, and Leon Fuchs (Hochschule Aalen) for his Bachelor's thesis on the development of a multispectral light source. Special prizes for scientific excellence, sustainability and biophotonics were also awarded for the first time.

For more information on all the award winners and their innovative work, please see the Fraunhofer Institute's full press releaseExternal link.

  • About the Applied Photonics Award

The 'Applied Photonics Award' emerged from the 'Green Photonics' young talent award - since 2018 with a new look and new focus. It is organised by the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, Germany. The institute has been conducting application-oriented research in optics and photonics for more than 25 years. As key technologies, these disciplines contribute to solving future challenges for society, business and industry. This award was created to honour particularly original and innovative diploma theses in the field of applied photonics.

The "Applied Photonics Award" will be awarded in 2024 with the kind support of the Association of German Engineers (VDI), the State Development Corporation of Thuringia (LEG Thüringen) and the companies JENOPTIK, TRUMPF and Huawei Technologies.
