Every year, normally on the Alumni Day, the best Master, Examination or Doctoral thesis of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy will be awarded a prize. In addition there is a prize for supporting the research in a doctoral project. The prizes were endowed by several sponsors de.

Faculty prizes sponsored by Rohde & Schwarz, München
Since 1991 the company Rohde & Schwarz, MünchenExternal link endowes prizes for the best Dissertation (1.500 EUR) and the best Diploma or Master thesis (1.000 EUR) of the faculty. The founders of the company Dr. Lothar Rohde and Dr. Hermann SchwarzExternal link endowed these prizes to honor "their" university where they did their doctorate at the Physical-Technical Institute in 1931. With the prizes were awarded outstanding scientific works, whereby the selection of the prize winners was carried out only by the faculty itself. The company Rohde & Schwarz expresses with these prizes its interest in outstanding qualified engineers and physicists.

Prize of the Dr.-Ing. Siegfried Werth Foundation
In 2010 the Dr.-Ing. Siegfried Werth Foundation first time sponsored a prize for the best dissertation or the best Diploma/Master theses in the field of optical measuring technology especially coordinate measuring technology. In future this prize which came about by an arrangement of the alumni Dr. Ralph Christoph, managing director of the Werth Messtechnik GmbH GießenExternal link, and PD Dr. Wolfgang Fried should be awarded to a graduate of the faculty every year.

Zeiss Ph.D. Award in Modern Optics
On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Carl Zeiss in 2016 the ZEISS company together with the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena offered the "ZEISS Ph.D. Award in Modern Optics". The prize is sponsored by ZEISS with 3.000 EUR. The aim is to support doctoral projects which are highly relevant for the development and application of modern optics, optoelectronics or photonics. The prize is awarded for the outstanding scientific research and technological implementation of aspects of this field.

Friedrich Hund Ph.D. Award
Since 2019 the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus FoundationExternal link sponsers the Friedrich Hund Ph.D. Award. This prize is awarded by the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy for Ph.D. thesis with outstanding scientific content, special originality of the solutions and an excellent presentation. The prize remembers on the activity of Friedrich Hund in Jena de from 1946 to 1951 and highlights outstandig work of young scientists.
There are two awards, one for fundamental research and the other for applied research. Each award is donated with 2,000 EURO.

Examination Prize of the Friedrich Schiller University
Every year the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität de awards to each faculty an examination prize for outstanding performance. In addition there is a prize for the best state exam in teaching of the Friedrich Schiller University. Rowena Morse Prize (former Habilitation Prize) of the Friedrich Schiller University
Every year the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität de awards an habilitation prize for outstanding performance. Since 2021 the prize was named Rowena Morse Prize and opened to a wider field of young post docs like Junior professors or Leaders of Research Groups.

Every year the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (German Academis Exchange Service) awards a prize for outstanding performance of foreign students. The prize is donated with 1,000 Euro.
At the Friedrich Schiller University the DAAD-Prize is awarded during the annual matriculation ceremony.
